Eighth week of the year is about to conclude but Kollywood hasn’t registered any ‘super-hit’ film so far at the box-office. Except for Sundar C’s multi-starrer comic venture Kalakalappu 2, no other film has done well at the box-office. It was in this backdrop that as many as five films – Bala’s Naachiyaar, Veera, Melnaattu Marumagan, Manushanaa Nee and Nagesh Thiraiyarangam released last Friday.
Starring Jyothika, G.V. Prakash Kumar and ‘Rockline’ Venkatesh in the lead and directed by Bala, the film released in more than 350 halls across the State. More than Rs.10 crores was invested in the film by theatre-owners and distributors. There were some hiccups prior to the film’s release in theatres but they were ironed out later.
Directed by the maverick Bala, Naachiyaar had a minimum-expected opening as crowds thronged theatres to watch Jyothika in action as a cop. Though the opening can’t be dubbed as ‘great’, it wasn’t bad either and the film continued its good show over the weekend as well. It collected Rs.4.69 crores in its first three days and all other films which released along with it bit the dust at the box-office.
Distributors and theatre-owners are confident of recovering their investment and assert that the film certainly belonged to the ‘hit’ category!
