During the eighties and nineties, films starring superstar Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan used to release on the same day, making their respective fans go mad with joy. However, almost invariably, Rajini’s films would do well and rock at the box-office while Kamal Haasan’s films, though they may not end up as failures, would hardly match the box-office collections of Rajini’s films.
In 1992, Rajini’s Thalapathy and Kamal Haasan’s Guna released on the same day and the box-office results are for everyone to feel who ruled, rules and would rule the box-office in Kollywood. The same thing happened more than a decade back when Rajini’s comeback film Chandramukhi clashed with Kamal Haasan’s Mumbai Express. It now appears that 2019 might witness two instances of the stars’ films clashing at the B-O.
Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam 2, whose 50% of shoot was wrapped up during the making of the prequel Vishwaroopam a few years back, is gearing up to hit the screens. Stiff opposition from certain groups marred the film’s release which did very well in theatres (thanks to the controversy?) and the making of the sequel got delayed due to various factors such as financial issues and Kamal Haasan’s ill-health.
Vishwaroopam, which has Kamal Haasan, Pooja Kumar and Andrea Jeremiah in the lead, might clash with Rajini’s 2.0 at the box-office. Produced by Lyka Productions and directed by Shankar, 2.0 has Rajinikanth, Akshay Kumar, Sudahshu Pandey and Amy Jackson in the lead. It remains to be seen whether Kamal would opt for simultaneous release of his and Rajini’s film or prefers a different date to release his Vishwaroopam 2!
