Legendary Playback Singer S. Janaki Not to Sing in Stage Concerts Anymore

Legendary playback singer Sishtla Sriramamurthy Janaki popularly known as S. Janaki has said that she would no more sing songs in music concerts on stages.

The 79-year old singer, who occasionally composes music too, has sung more than 48,000 songs in more than 17 Indian and foreign languages over a period of more than six decades. The ‘Nightingale of South India’, who is often referred to in the same breath as legendary female playback singers Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle and P. Suseela, has enthralled her fans and music lovers for more than 50 years.

The Guntur-born singer started singing when she was just 3 yers of age. Her song Annakkili Unnai Thedudhe in Annakkili (Maestro Ilaiyaraaja’s debut film as music director) is still ringing in the ears of music-lovers. The honorary doctor is a winner of many awards and accolades at regional, national and international levels.

The veteran singer announced a few years back that she won’t sing in films and has been collecting donations/funds on behelf of her ‘Janaki Charitable Trust’ to help mentally retarded children. Taking part at an event to collect funds in Mysore, Janaki said that she was happy with this particular phase of life. “In order to let new singers emerge, I have decided not to sing in concerts anymore,” she announced, much to the disappointment of her millions of fans worldwide.

Respecting her decision, we can only wish her good health in the years to come!
