It is rumoured in Kollywood that faced with a string of failures and in a desperate attempt to deliver a super-hit film, ace film-maker Mani Ratnam is toying with the idea of remaking his own 1986 classic Mouna Ragam to suit today’s trends.
A huge star cast of Vijay Sethupathi, Jyothika, Aravind Swamy, Fahadh Faasil and Aishwarya Rajesh has been finalized to star in Mani Ratnam’s next directorial venture which is as yet untitled. The film brings Vijay Sethupathi to star in a Mani Ratnam film for the first time; so does Jyothika while Aravind Swamy has starred in quite a few blockbusters of the film-maker including Roja and Bombay.
Vijay Sethupathi’s role is said to be an ‘extended cameo’ on the lines of the memorable issued by Karthik in the 1986 classic Mouna Ragam which had mesmerizing melodies by Maestro Ilaiyaraaja. Mouna Ragam broke the prevailing trend in 1986 when the hero would invariably get the heroine’s hand in marriage; it altered the trend and became a trend-setter for many films which followed later.
Mouna Ragam ranks high among Mani Ratnam’s classics but the film-maker appears to have lost his ‘Midas’ Touch’ in recent years as except for O Kadhal Kanmani (only to some extent), all his films in the past 10-12 years have bombed at the box-office. It remains to be seen whether he attempts a remake of Mouna Ragam to reverse his box-office (mis)fortunes or opts for a fresh script!
