Critically acclaimed films such as Samuthirakani’s Appa, Vetrimaaran’s Visaranai, Raju Murugan’s Joker and Vijaykumar’s Uriyadi won awards at a function organized by the Tamil Nadu Murpokku Ezhuthalar & Kalaignar Sangam yesterday.
The Sangam took into reckoning the 191 films which released in 2016 and selected 8 films out of which 4 films were finalized for awards. A 40-member strong jury chose the award-winning films. The function was presided over by Sangam’s president Tamilselvan and in the presence of secretary Venkatesan. Actress Rohini took part in the function as a special invitee.
Plenty of films release each year and many of them turn out to be successful, films with a social outlook and which express their concern for the society’s plight are only far and few. The Sangam has been honouring makers of those films which speak about the society’s ills. Rajumurugan, Samuthirakani, Vetrimaaran and Vijayakumar were honoured with awards at the event.
While Vetrimaaran’s Visaranai spoke about the arrogant attitude of police personnel, Samuthirakani’s Appa dealt with parents’ greedy attitude in imposing their will/wish on their children and also about the money-mongering private schools. Raju Murugan’s Joker was a classic satire on today’s politics and the corrupt society we live in. Uriyadi by Vijayakumar unmasked the caste-based tendencies prevalent in society even in this jet-age.
“Authors preserve the right to celebrate exemplary films which carry strong social messages and the awards are a means of expressing our feelings,” Venkatesan said.
