This Deepavali (18th October) would see Karthi, Vikranth and Vijay vying for box-office honours as films starring them have been lined up for release on the day of lights.
Deepavali, like Pongal, is a ‘big day’ for Kollywood as filmmakers of note as well as debutant filmmakers aim to release their films on this day. More than a decade back, at least 7-10 films would be releasing on this day but of late, the number of films releasing on this big day has come down to 3-5. This year, only 3 films have so far been confirmed to release on Deepavali.
Vijay’s Mersal, starring Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha and Nithya Menen as heroines and having SJ Suryah, Vadivelu and Kovai Sarala in its cast, is to release on Deepavali. It also has music by A.R. Rahman, who is scoring music for a Vijay-starrer only for the third time after Udhaya (2003) and Azhagiya Tamizh Magan (2007), both of which bombed miserably at the box-office. Atlee Kumar has directed this film.
Karthi’s Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru, which brings back to Kollywood the pretty-looking and picture-perfect Rakul Preet Singh after a few years’ hiatus, has been directed by Sathuranga Vettai fame Vinod and has been produced by Dream Warrior Pictures. Sathyan Suriyan is the film’s cinematographer while Mohammed Ghibran has scored the music.
Vikranth’s Nenjil Thunivirunthal has Sundeep Kishan in a parallel role and marks the debut in Tamil films in respect of the stunning-looking Mehrene Kaur Pirzada as heroine. Cousin of Vijay and who hasn’t received much help from his established brother, Vikranth hopes to make his mark in Kollywood with this film.
