Popular comedian ‘Alva’ Vasu passed away in Chennai yesterday after a prolonged spell of illness. He was 57 years of age.
Vasu, who would procure ‘Alva’ for Sathyaraj in the late Manivannan’s super-duper hit film Amaithipadai, got the nick-name ‘Alva’ after the film’s stupendous success more than two decades back. He excelled as a side-kick to ace comedian Vadivelu, at times ever surpassing Vadivelu’s acting prowess.
Born in a poor family, Vasu was academically brilliant and leant nuances of music thanks to his interest in music. He learnt to play guitar and was quite popular in college for his musical talents while pursuing M.Com. at American College in Madurai. His creative instincts made him work with Manivannan as one of his most-preferred assistant directors.
He penned the script of comedy portions in Manivannan’s films and later started playing small roles in films as he couldn’t find a producer to produce films out of his scripts. His association with Vadivelu continued for many years; Vasu later went on to star in more than 900 films sometime excelling even in character-driven roles.
Let’s pray to the Almighty to lay his soul in lasting peace.
