Popular film-maker Dasari Narayana Rao passed away yesterday in Hyderabad. He was 75 years of age.
Rao, who had joined the Congress party many years back, had briefly held the post of Union Minister of State for Coal & Mines in the erstwhile Congress-led UPA regime’s 10-year long tenure at the Centre from 2004-14.
Soon after former Tamil Nadu chief-minister J. Jayalalithaa’s demise last December, Rao had said that he would make a film on the life and times of Jayalalithaa.
Rao had been suffering from breathing difficulties and kidney-related issues for the past many months. He was admitted to a leading private hospital in Hyderabad some time back. His health deteriorated yesterday and despite doctors’ best efforts to revive him, he passed away.
The maverick film-maker had made 151 films in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi film industries.
Superstar Rajinikanth tweeted on his Twitter account stating that Rao was one of the most amazing film-makers he had ever worked with. “His loss is irreparable and I pray to God to lay his soul in lasting peace!” he said. Kamal Haasan expressed his heart-felt condolences to the surviving members of Rao’s family.
