Superstar Rajinikanth’s last year’s colossal hit film Kabali, which completed its 225-day run in theatres yesterday, has created a new record in the history of Tamil films in Chennai by collecting a whopping sum of Rs.11.44 crores in Chennai alone!
Released on 22nd July last year, Kabali became an instant hit with the masses, Rajini’s millions of fans and movie-goers. The ‘opening’ collections of Kabali are unmatched as almost every single theatre in the whole Tamil Nadu screened Kabali it its first 4-5 days. More than 90% of the theatres in Chennai released Kabali where tickets were sold in the range of Rs.500-1000.
Within its first three days, the film had collected Rs.150 crores at the global box-office. Theatre-owners and multiplex operators in Chennai who released Kabali raked in huge profits via ticket sales as well as ticket sold in ‘black’. On an average, most tickets were sold for Rs.500 and surprisingly enough, nobody seemed complain. ‘Kalaipuli’ S. Thanu, the film’s producer, has now come out with the facts.
It has been officially announced that the film has collected a whopping sum of Rs.11.44 crores in Chennai alone, based on the amount printed in tickets. Insiders concede that the actual amount collected could be more as the sum is based on ‘official’ calculation based on ticket sales in counters alone. Doesn’t it prove that Rajini is still the ‘Baassha’ of box-office despite completing four decades in films?
