Close on the heels of the abduction and molestation of Tamil actress Bhavana in Kerala, some actresses have come out in the open detailing such experiences they had had to contend with in the past but remained silent for various reasons.
Actress Varalaxmi Sarathkumar shocked her friends, relatives and fans when she dropped a bomb last week stating that the programme executive of a private television channel made verbal/physical overtures to her.
She said the chose to keep quiet as she didn’t want to harm the channel’s reputation. ‘Kadhal’ Sandhya, who was hardly 15 when she starred in Balaji Sakthivel’s realistic hit film Kadhal in 2004, has also a tale of molestation to share.
For some reasons, the mightily talented Sandhya couldn’t make it big in Tamil films but is known as an actress of substance. She got married some years back and is now a mother of a child. The 27-year old actress, who is still good enough to play lead roles in films, was taking part at a function in Chennai yesterday and revealed that Bhavana was a close friend of hers and that her heart bled for her friend.
“I had also faced similar molestation attempts a few years back; however, as it was a crowded place, I couldn’t pin-point the accused,” she said and added that actresses were always vulnerable such molestation attempts whenever they visit crowded places or are alone. “I admire Bhavana’s courage for complaining to the police which has made other actresses come out in the open about their experiences,” Sandhya said.
“Only when these things are brought to light, we can minimize the possibility of such crimes occurring in future and on this count, Bhavana’s courage deserves to be lauded,” Sandhya concluded.
