RJ-turned-actor Balaji has appealed to the Govt. of Tamil Nadu to consider conducting the annual Tamil traditional sporting activity of Jallikkattu, held during Pongal each year, in Chennai also.
“For the past week, youths and students in Tamil Nadu had created a huge revolution by protesting for and succeeding in getting permission to hold Jallikkattu. We literally took to streets to establish our rights and achieved success. State Govt. has passed a permanent Act for Jallikkattu, thus obliterating all fears of conducting the annual event. It has also assured its fullest cooperation and assistance in holding Jallikkattu.
“We are only too happy that we took up an issue which remained in cold storage for the past three years and managed to achieve the impossible. However, our lasting victory would be to ensure that PeTA is banned in the country and the PCA Act is amended by the Centre. Though it was a Jallikkattu protest, we let out our angst which lay suppressed inside all our hearts for the past 20-25 years.
“The revolution also attracted people’s attention to many issues including boycotting Pepsi, Coke, etc. It’s time we took note of all the events unfolding around us. I also appeal to the State to hold the annual Jallikkattu in Chennai’s Island Grounds on a regular basis from this year onwards so that it is celebrated as a Tamil carnival in the years to come,” Balaji’s statement said.
