It turns out that actor Madhavan, who worked with ace director Gautham Vasudev Menon in only his third film in Tamil in Minnale (in 2001), asked Menon to first narrate the script of the film to ace director and his mentor Mani Ratnam which didn’t amuse Menon at all!
Menon has said recently in a lighter vain that he would never be able to forgive Maddy a.k.a. Madhavan for ‘asking’ him to narrate the script of Minnale first to ace director Mani Ratnam. Menon has recalled the incident, which occurred more than a decade and a half, during his recent interview to a web-based film site.
“When I approached Maddy to ask him to play the lead role in Minnale, he told him to first narrate the script to Mani Ratnam and win his approval. Mani Ratnam was no doubt a huge inspiration for me and I was very apprehensive in approaching Mani Sir and narrate my script to him. I told Maddy that I won’t be feel comfortable doing so but Maddy insisted that I should do so and I finally relented.
“I narrated the script to Mani Ratnam with an odd feeling that I should somehow make him feel impressed with my script. As it turned out later, Mani Sir didn’t like the script but Maddy still went ahead and starred in the film which went on to become a super-duper hit,” Menon concludes.
