Hansika has conceded that though she is aware of how to speak in Tamil, she doesn’t do so as she is hesitant that she might commit plenty of errors while doing so.
Most of the frontline actresses survive on dubbed voices though they are fluent in Tamil with the exception of a few actresses such as Anjali, Dhansika, etc. Ironically enough, even actresses on Tamil soaps on television too don’t speak in their voices and survive only on dubbed voices. Small-screen artistes Priya Mahalakshmi and Rakshita, though fluent in Tamil (Priya is a television anchor as well?!), owe their popularity to a huge extent to a dubbing artiste who dubs for both of them.
Hansika has just Bogan opposite ‘Jayam’ Ravi on her hands. This would be her third film opposite ‘Jayam’ Ravi after Engeyum Kaadhal and Romeo Juliet. She was very busy till last year but now is out of favour with film producers and directors. Titled as ‘Chinna Khushboo’, Hansika has never dubbed in her voice in Tamil films and speaks only in English during television interviews.
“No doubt, I have learnt lot of Tamil words and can manage a bit. However, I’m apprehensive of speaking in Tamil as change of words (not with purpose) might destroy the very meaning I want to convey. This fear makes me avoid speaking in Tamil,” says Hansika who is to celebrate Deepavali with the 31 children she has taken on adoption in Mumbai.
