Legendary playback singer S. Janaki has announced her decision not to sing songs in films anymore with a lullaby she recently recorded for an upcoming Malayalam film titled as 10 Kalpanakal.
Despite her 78 years of age, Janaki still sings beautifully as was amply proved by her song in Dhanush’s Velaiyilla Pattathari in 2014. After debuting as a playback singer in 1957 with Vidhiyin Vilaiyattu, Janaki has been singing almost non-stop for the past 59 years.
“The lullaby I recorded for the Malayalam film would be my last song; I have become too old and won’t be singing anymore in films or music concerts,” Janaki has made an official announcement, thereby disappointing her millions of fans across the globe, who always associate her voice with the mesmerizing music of Maestro Ilaiyaraaja.
Janaki has sung more than 48,000 songs in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, etc. “I didn’t choose my last song to be a Malayalam song; it happened naturally and I’m only happy that my last song is a lullaby,” Janaki concludes. Her last song in Tamil was the Thandhaiyum Yaaro from the recently released Jiiva-Nayantara starrer Thirunaal.
Let’s salute the legend and respect her decision, thanking her for all the melodies!
