Actress Gautami has opened up and let out a secret that she has held for more than three decades: the actress, who is on a comeback trail, has said that she became an actress in the eighties mainly to skip college as the fear of ‘ragging’ loomed large in those days.
One of the frontline heroines from the mid-eighties, Gautami had paired up opposite all top heroes including superstar Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Vijayakanth, Prabhu, Sathyaraj, Sarathkumar and with Ramarajan till mid-nineties when she quit films for marriage.
She made a comeback to Tamil films with last year’s hit film Papanasam in which she got to pair up opposite Kamal Haasan, her real-life live-in partner.
She is all set to star opposite Prabhu after more than 20 years. Taking part at an FM event, Gautami shared with listeners the secret of her becoming an actress. “I didn’t enter films with the objective of becoming an actress.
I had just joined Engineering course when I got my first film offer. My parents allowed me to act as most of the crew members were either our relatives or close family friends.
“I had a very different reason for foraying into films. I was very apprehensive of getting ‘ragged’ as I was a rank newcomer to college. In order to skip the possibility of attending college, I agreed to star in the film but the continuous tempting offers that came my way made me take an U-turn in my life. It was only later that I decided to become a full-fledged actress and didn’t go back on my decision,” says Gautami.
