National award-winning director Vetrimaran has opined that his latest directorial venture Visaranai wouldn’t have courted as much success as it has if he had cast national award-winning actor Dhanush in place of Dinesh in the film.
“I always felt that an established actor in the role of a guy who receives third-degree torture at the hands of the police wouldn’t have gone down well with his fans.
This is exactly the reason why I didn’t think about casting Dhanush in the film,” says the bearded director who has made two super-duper hit films starring Dhanush in Polladhavan and Aadukalam.
Speaking to newsmen in Chennai on the eve of screening the uncensored version of Visaranai, Vetrimaaran said Dhanush would have definitely done his part well as the protagonist in the film.
“However, if he had starred in the film, it wouldn’t have courted as much success as it has achieved now. Dhanush is a frontline actor who has his own set of fans. As such, I don’t think he would have fitted the role well.
“Surely, his fans would have felt angry with me had I cast him in Dinesh’s role. In fact, I now wonder whether Dhanush’s fans would have accepted him in his Aadukalam role if the film is to release now,” he said. On another note he opined that “I’m thankful to all those positive reviews about Visaranai and all those who watched the film in theatres and enjoyed!”
