50-year old Kalpana Ranjani a.k.a. Kalpana, the Tamil and Malayalam actress who is better known as Urvashi’s elder sister, passed away yesterday morning (25th January) at a Hyderabad Hotel.
Kalpana had been to Hyderabad a few days back to shoot for an upcoming Telugu film. Her personal assistant said that she got up at 04:00 a.m. for her morning chores to leave for an early morning shoot at 06:00 a.m.
However, when she didn’t respond to the many calls made to her cell-phone, her room was opened by Hotel authorities who found her lying unconscious on her bed.
She was rushed to the nearby Apollo Hospitals where she was declared brought dead. Doctors said that she might suffered cardiac arrest. Kalpana’s sudden demise has shocked the Malayalam film industry with Mohanlal and Dulquer Slamaan already mourning her death on social networking sites. Kalpana, who divorced her director husband Anil Kumar in 2012, had been staying with her daughter Srimayee.
Star of more than 300 films in Tamil and Malayalam, Kalpana debuted in Tamil films with K. Bhagyaraj’s Chinna Veedu in the mid-eighties. Kalpana won the national award for ‘best supporting actress’ for her amazing portrayal in Tanichalla Gnaan few years back. Kalpana’s body is expected to be brought to Kerala this afternoon.
