‘Kalaipuli’ S. Thanu, who is the producer of superstar Rajinikant’s upcoming film Kabali, has said that the distribution and release rights of the film in U.S. has been sold for Rs.8.5 crores, which is a new record for Tamil films.
Thanu was speaking at an event organized by Rajini’s fans in Sholingar, Vellore on Sunday evening. “When I took up the distribution of Rajini’s Bhairavi in 1978, I advertized the film in newspapers as starring ‘superstar’ Rajinikanth. Rajini sent the producer and director the very next day to my office that he shouldn’t be prefixed with such title when legendary MGR and Sivaji Ganesan were still active in film industry.
“I then advertized as ‘Great Supestar Rajini’ after which Rajini reluctantly agreed for the ‘superstar’ title. Rajini is an epitome of humanitarianism. It is very difficult to come across a person who is as good as Rajini in real life. Rajini would always remain the permanent ‘superstar’ of Tamil films. At this juncture, I would also like to reveal to Rajini’s fans an important record which has just been created by Rajini.
“Let me say this irrespective of whether taxmen would raid my premises in future or not. The release and distribution rights of Rajini’s Kabali in U.S. have been sold for a record price of Rs.8.5 crores; films produced by me staring other actors hardly touch the Rs.2 crore mark but Rajini’s film has been lapped up by Rs.8.5 crores, which is proof enough of the fact that Rajini would always be on top as the permanent ‘superstar’.
“I’m also a huge fan of Rajini. After the release of Kabali in theatres, I would hold a huge conference for Rajini’s fans. I’m giving it a promise to all of you,” he said amid cheers and thunderous clapping.
