Not so unexpectedly, Kamal Haasan’s Thoongaavanam which hit the screens across the State and elsewhere on Deepavali on Tuesday has started slowly at the box-office.
Kamal Haasan-Trisha-Prakash Raj-Kishore-Sampath Raj starrer Thoongaavanam released in theatres along with Ajith Kumar-Shruti Haasan-Lakshmi Menon starrer Vedalam and another lesser-known film Inji Morappa. Ajith and Kamal Haasan’s fans were obviously keen to give a grand opening to their respective stars’ films.
Trade circles had already reported that Ajith’s Vedalam has created a new box-office record by collecting Rs.15.5 crores on its first day in theatres in the State, thus beating the earlier record held by superstar Rajinikanth’s Lingaa and Vijay’s Kaththi. Thongaavanam, however, managed to collect only a moderate Rs.4 crores on its first day in theatres in the State.
The second day’s collections witnessed a slight drop due to the heavy rains lashing the State for the past few days. However, as the film has been lauded by critics and has received good reviews, theatrical collections are expected to pick in the coming days. In the meantime, Cheekati Rajyam, the Telugu version of Thoongaavanam, is slated to release in theatres next Friday (20th November).
