Distributors and theatre-owners across the State are in a dilemma as they are not sure which of the two big films among superstar Rajinikanth’s Pa. Ranjith-directed Kabali and Vijay’s Atlee-directed Khakee would be releasing in theatres on Tamil New Year’s Day next year (April 14).
‘Kalaipuli’ S. Thanu is incidentally the producer of both these films. Thanu, who has distributed many of Rajini’s films in the past, gets to produce his first Rajini-starrer in Kabali. The first schedule of the film’s shoot had already been wrapped up in our own Chennai and the film’s crew has already landed up in Malaysia a fortnight back to shoot for the remaining schedule(s) of the film’s shoot.
It is said that after Malaysia, the crew would go to other countries such as Singapore, Indonesia and China (Hong Kong). In the meantime, Thanu has also commenced the shoot of Khakee. In all probability, the entire shoot of Kabali would be wrapped up by January and the shoot of Khakee (title may undergo change) may be wrapped up in February.
This brings us to the question of which film would be releasing on 14th January on Tami New Yar’s Day. As both are big-budget films, Thanu is likely to take a well-planned decisionin releasing them in theatres. Sources close to him say that in all probability, Rajini’s Kabali may release on 14th April with the Vijay-starrer getting postponed to release in summer.
It may be noted that Rajini has always been the ‘emperor’ of box-office and any film releasing along with a Rajini-starrer doesn’t succeed. Rajini’s fans are quick in point out to the fact that Vijay’s Sachein, released along with Rajini’s Chandramukhi almost a decade back, bit the dust while Chandramukhi re-wrote box-office records.
