Hemamalini, Tamil Nadu’s pride and former top Bollywood actress who later went on to marry Dharmendra, the first-ever ‘action hero’ of Hindi films, has condemned the recent trend by artistes of returning to the Union government the national awards they had been honoured with.
Speaking to newspersons in Mumbai recently, the BJP M.P. said “Artistes work hard to get these national awards which are awards of excellence given to honour the artistes’ commitment, sincerity and hard-work in their respective fields. It’s not good at all to return these awards back to the Centre. I feel it is a protest which has been politically orchestrated by a few to serve their vested interests.
“National award is a national honour conferred on someone by the Government. Those who asked me in the past if I could help them get the national award are now returning them,” she said and added that as of now, she had no comments to offer about the raging controversy related to the Film & Television Institute of India, Pune.
