Responding to the request made by PMK leader and former Union Health & Family Welfare Minister Anbumani, actor Dhanush has said that he would never star in smoking sequences on-screen in his future films. “In reality, I don’t smoke at all,” the national award-winning actor has said in a statement.
Dhanush, who is on a high with back-to-back hits in Velaiyilla Pattathari, Anegan, Shamitabh and the recently-released Maari, faced criticism for smoking sequences. In Maari, in particular, had more such sequences and even his ardent fans were of the opinion that as a popular actor, he shouldn’t be promoting the habit of smoking.
“Your father-in-law and superstar Rajinikanth had given up smoking long back. Father-in-law is almost equal to a father; in order to respect him, it would be better if you too stopped smoking on-screen,” Anbumani’s letter to Dhanush had said. Surprising many, Dhanush has responded to Anbumani’s letter in just a day.
“In reality, I don’t smoke at all. I smoked in Maari as the character I played in the film demanded me to do so and as per the director’s instructions. I undertake to declare that in future, my films won’t feature me in smoking sequences. I would love to assure this to Shri Anbumani through this statement,” Dhanush said.
