Last year, more than 200 Tamil films released in theatres, averaging more than four films per week, which was ‘too much’ by any stretch of imagination. The number of Tamil films releasing each year in theatres has been going up for the past few years.
Even before the conclusion of six months in 2015, more than 100 Tamil films have already released. Going by this yardstick, it has already become a certainty that the total number of films releasing this year would cross 200 for the second consecutive year.
For the past few weeks, not more than 2-3 films were releasing each week which provided a huge relief to theatre-owners as well as the producers of those films as almost all those films manage to do average to good business at the box-office.
However, the coming Friday (26th June) might create a record of sorts as 9 films including 8 Tamil films are lined up to release in theatres.
Adhi’s Yagavarayinum Naa Kaakka, Vimal’s Kaaval, Vishnu’s Indru Netru Naalai, Karunas’ Lodukku Pandi, director Madhumita’s Moone Moonu Vaarthai and a few small-budget ventures such as Thozhan Oru Thozhi, Paranjothi and Meenatchi Kaadhalan Ilangovan are releasing this Friday. Hollywood venture Demonic too joins the race.
