Lyricist Thamarai has lodged a complaint with the Chennai Commissioner of Police against the vulgar phone-calls and threats she has been getting for the past many months. She has also alleged that she is facing untold harassment even via internet.
“I went to the Chennai Police Commissioner’s office to lodge a complaint. For the past few months, I have been getting vulgar telephone calls, threats and harassment through Internet.
I waited for long before I decided to take things in my hands and make a formal complaint about these things. I feel these harassments/threats are a direct fall-out of the struggle I waged a few months back against my husband Thyagu.
“A perverted perception prevails in society that a single woman can be ‘approached’ in every possible manner. I only feel that all the harassment and threats that I’m being meted out are a direct warning to women like me who have had the courage to swim against the tide. Obviously, such kind of vulgar talk and threats are bound to shake the confidence of any woman.
“I decided to come out and make a complaint as I’m aware that there are many women like me who had been suffering in silence. If my complaint is acted upon and the culprits punished, it might become a source of encouragement for other women to follow suit. I have also sought protection to myself and my son from the police,” Thamarai has recorded on her Facebook account.
