Tamil films have never been short of comedians and comic sequences in them. Comedy has become an integral part of serious films, emotion-filled family dramas, action-packed films and even horror films.
People love them in every form. Goundamani and Vadivelu, who once ruled the roost in Kollywood, are no more part of the industry, passing on the mantle of keeping the audiences ‘happy’ to the likes of Santhanam & Co.
Santhanam led the comedians’ charge in 2014 and had as many as nine releases in the year. He had a good time with films such as Veeram, Aranmanai and Vanavarayan Vallavarayan.
He also had a good time with superstar Rajinikanth in Lingaa and did decent work in films such as Idhu Kathirvelan Kadhal and Bramman besides playing the lead role in Vallavanukku Pullum Aayudham which didn’t turn out to be a failure.
Parota Soori had a very significant and satisfying year in the year which just ended. Soori made the grade from second-string comedian to a top comedian in the year and had 13 releases in the year.
He shared screen-space with Vijay in Jilla and with Suriya in Anjaan. His comedy was enjoyable in films such as Pattaya Kelappanum Pandiya, Maan Karate, Jeeva, Poojai, Oru Oorla Rendu Raja and Vellaikaara Durai.
Karunakaran of Yaamirukka Bayamey and Jigarthanda fame reaped the benefits of the stardom he got through Soodhu Kavvum which released in 2013. Karunakaran even got the opportunity to star along with superstar Rajinikanth in his Lingaa.
He has plenty of films on hand and had significant releases in 2014 including Aadama Jaichomada, Yaan and Kappal.
Satish, star of films such as Kaththi and Maan Karate, also made some headway.
