Until recently, villains were considered unnecessary in a film. They drew and spread negative aura, but little was it understood that these actors were capable of convincing everyone to believe their on-screen grotesque presence.
Now, the scenario has considerably changed, with people having thrown open their mind to critique the hero and villain by the same scale. However, for a person from the yester-generation of movies, it is no less than an ordeal to have become a successful, established, renowned and widely accepted villain. One such man in Kollywood is Anand Raj.
While villains are being imported to Kollywood from up north, Anand Raj has defied this trend, being exported to Bollywood – thanks to Prabhu Dheva’s ‘Action Jackson’. “I am happy that I began with the right project for my Bollywood debut. As this is a straight Hindi film, we had a lot of learning to do, based on the script, and my character is original” beams Anand Raj.
But the dancer-director had one strict condition before Anand Raj could sign the dotted line for ‘Action Jackson’. “I had to lose 15 kilos! Prabhu Dheva waited for a year and let me sign the agreement for the movie, only after he saw the results in me, of having lost 12 kilos” says Anand, who is happy to work with Ajay Devgn. Speaking on the film’s hero, Anand says “Ajay is one of the best actors I have come across. He is hospitable and truly caring.”
