The number of Tamil films releasing each year has been increasing steadily; going by the present trend as we are already into the tenth month of the year, trade pundits have predicted that the number might cross 200.
10th October (tomorrow) might witness the release in theatres of as many as 10 new films. The films which have been lined up to release tomorrow are: Aalamaram, Gubeer, Jamaai, Kurai Ondrumillai, Myual, Nee Naan Nizhal, Panduvam, Pulippu Inippu, Vennila Veedu and Yaavum Vasappadum.
In case of Vennila Veedu and Yaavum Vasappadum, even the special show for journalists has been announced. One has to look in the distant past to see whether 10 films had released in the past at any stage in the history of Tamil cinema.
Even on days such as Deepavali and Pongal, which are the most important days for Tamil film producers and directors to release their films, this much number of films don’t release usually.
Most of the above-said films have managed to bag just one show in many multiplexes in cities and towns. In some single-theatre complexes, as many as three films release, splitting the matinee, evening and night shows among them. Some films are getting released in Chennai alone as the producers are aiming to release them in the suburbs and in the rest of the State after a few weeks.
