Shweta Basu Prasad, the actress who was held on charges of indulging in flesh trade by the Hyderabad Police from a posh hotel in Banjara Hills, has said that she was ‘wrongly guided’ by a few persons to take to this and regretted that she had succumbed to the lure of money. With that, she also dropped a bomb saying that many leading actresses were also indulging in this business but had been escaping the arm of the law.
“I was feeling cash-crunch; I had no films on hand and felt that all avenues for earning money had been closed. I was then lured by some persons into this business saying the money involved was huge,” said Basu while deposing before the police. 23-year old Shweta has acted in Karunas’ Chandhamama and had also starred in television serials.
Soon after her arrest, she was sent to a women rehabilitation centre. Speaking to the press, Shweta said that her choice of wrong films ensured that her career as an actress became a short-lived one. “I was forced to take to this (flesh trade) for want of money; once I got into it, I couldn’t come out of it as I was under someone’s control.
“Few can sympathize with me and understand my predicament. I would also like to state that like me, there are many leading actresses who had been indulging in this trade; while I have been caught, they haven’t yet been caught,” said Shweta, sending shock waves throughout the South Indian film industry.
