Supreme Court relief to Khushboo

Actress Khushboo got a legal relief on Thursday when the Supreme Court stayed the order of Madras High Court transferring all the 23 cases to Chennai Metropolitan Magistrate Court for trial. A bench headed by Justice KG Balakrishnan issued notices to some of the pro PMK and VCK outfits, who had alleged that the actress’s remarks denigrated Tamil women.

The Madras High Court on April 30 had declined to quash the cases registered against her and asked the City Metropolitan Magistrate to complete the trial within 6 months.

Khushboo in her appeal against the order of Madras High Court, alleged that the cases were false and frivolous, filed with the sole view of getting some cheap political publicity by certain group.

She also said that cases were filed when the by-election was slated in the state at the time of October 2005. She argued that the cases were against the freedom of expression guaranteed to the individuals under the constitution.

After getting the order from Madras High Court, the actress worried a lot and feared that getting justice might delayed a lot due to the order. So she personally visited Delhi and appealed in the Apex Court against the Madras High Court’s order.

Khushboo had given interview to a Tamil weekly in September 2005 on pre-Marital sex and advocated and suggested for a safe sex before marriage to avoid AIDS and other sexual deceases. Pattali Makkal Katchi and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi opposed her suggestion and staged protests against the actress. Hundreds of Women stood with broomsticks in front of her house to show their opposition to the actress for her vies on sex. But stood by her words and never withdrew her statement.
