Kamal Haasan rues lack of quality artistes in Kollywood

11th-Chennai-International-Film-Festival-Inauguration-Photos-131The 11th edition of the Chennai International Film Festival got off to a grand start in Chennai. Ulaganayagan Kamal Haasan and Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan took part in the inaugural day’s festival and inaugurated the festival by lighting the traditional ‘Kuthuvilakku’.

Almost all veteran artistes from Kollywood took part in the Festival where Kamal Haasan answered queries by Maestro Ilaiyaraaja, Balu Mahendra, Mani Ratnam and Suriya. Ilaiyaraaja’s poser to Kamal was: “Tamil films have always stood away from global cinema…why shold eyes stay off the body? Why does Tamil cinema not align with world cinema? What is your role in merging it with films from other countries?”

“Tamil cinema has squint eyes….let’s forget it for the time being. We don’t know in which direction it looks at…let’s not make fun of it; it could be corrected with a (pair of) spectacles…

I can’t do anything on my own. Audiences should patronize all kinds of movies made and attempted…festivals such as these provide wonderful opportunity for this. I feel Tamil films haven’t yet qualified to take part in film festivals…

“We don’t have world-class film-makers in large numbers…how long can we pull on with just one or two guys? A situation should arise wherein Tamil film should be appreciated at all the fora. Producers should attempt at making films of quality and shouldn’t avoid doing so under the premise that the people may not like it,” said Kamal Haasan.
