The late and legendary MGR’s 1965 super-duper hit Aayirathil Oruvan is all set to re-release in theatres in a digitized version. The film had MGR pairing up opposite a cute-looking Jayalalithaa, the chief minister, and had super-duper hit songs and well-choreographed fight sequences.
Directed by B.R. Panthuly, the film was an instant hit the moment it released in theatres on 09th July, 1965. The music by the duo of Viswanathan-Ramamurthy only added to the film’s success at the box-office. Of late, the trend has bee to release old classics in digitized version and though MGR’s films have always done well in theatres, this would be the first time that an MGR film is being released in digitized version.
Till superstar Rajinikanth’s entry in Tamil films, MGR was considered as the box-office ‘Baadshah’ and is considered so even now in many distribution zones. Aayirathil Oruvan had a huge star-cast in Nagesh, M.N. Nambiar, R.S. Manohar and Madhavi. MGR played a revolutionary who took on the tyrannical ruler of his country to finally achieve independence for his people.
The film had been shot abroad extensively and the sequences filmed on the ship in mid-sea drew appreciation from critics at that time. More than 48 years after its release in theatres, the film is to release in theatres all over the State in January after the digitization work is completed. The sound is also upgraded to make the film sport a ‘new look’.
