A. Sarkunam, the national award-winning director who won the coveted award for his Vaagai Sooda Vaa which released in 2011, is making Naiyaandi starring Dhanush and teenage sensation Nazriya Nazim in the lead. Sarkunam has opined that Dhanush and Nazriya make great ‘on-screen’ pair and would be loved by the audiences.
Sarkunam debuted as director in Kollywood with the 2010 super-hit film Kalavani. After directing Vimal in the lead role in his first two films, Sarkunam has opted to join hands with Dhanush. Nazriya’s debut (direct) film in Tamil released last Friday (27th September) in the form of Raja Rani.
Dhanush has had a mixed back at the box-office this year: Raanjhanaa, his debut Bollywood film, released a few months back and was declared a moderate hit across the country. However, Dhanush had to contend with a failure in Bharat Bala’s Maryan which released soon after Raanjhanaa. As such, Dhanush is definitely in need of a ‘decent’ hit film in Kollywood to stay in the reckoning.
Talking about his film, Sarkunam says “We planned the shooting schedule well in advance and completed the entire shoot in just 48 days’ time. We shot in Thanjavur, Kumbakonam and Pollachi. Dhanush plays a simpleton in the film and cooperated well which enabled us to wrap up the shoot in record time. He has also sung the ‘Teddy Bear’ song in the film which has become quite a rage among the youths now.
“Nazriya plays a dentist and her girl-next-door appearance and casual acting is sure to take her places in Kollywood in future. Dhanush and Nazriya look very well on-screen and I’m sure they would do many films together later on,” said Sarkunam. Others in the cast in Naiyaandi include ‘Pyramid’ Natarajan, Soori, ‘Marina’ Satish, Singampuli, Sathyan and Ashwin.
