Kamal Haasan has said that though he and superstar Rajinikanth starred together in a few films at the start of the latter’s career, the decision to go separate ways had, in the long run, benefited both of them. Kamal was speaking at the function to mark the release of the ‘digital’ trailer of Ninaithale Inikkum which had him and Rajini in lead roles and released in 1979. The film is to be re-released today.
Ninaithale Inikkum re-releases after getting modified using cinemascope mode and hi-tech digital sound. Speaking at the function, Kamal said “My brother Rajini isn’t able to attend this function and that’s why I’ve come. We are each other’s substitute; when I’m not able to attend, he’d go to the function and vice-versa. The shoot of Ninaithale Inikkum, which was held 34 years back, still has many unforgettable memories for me.
“The days when I and Rajini used to star together in films were really memorable ones. Incidentally enough, it was during the making of this film that we decided not to star together in future. I told Rajini that both of us were getting the equal share of a hero’s fee which would hamper our professional growth. I suggested him that we should start acting as solo heroes from then onwards.
“Rajini agreed to my idea but said he had already taken advance from Panju Sir for an upcoming film. We met Panju Sir and told him to make films starring us as solo heroes. He too agreed to it. Only because of the brave decision we took, we managed to reach the top in the industry. Had we continued to star together in films, we would only be traveling by autorickshaw by this time.
“I’m extremely delighted to share the dias today with the likes of Balachander and M.S. Viswanathan. It’s Balachander who had been instrumental in me becoming a director. I still have an unfulfilled ambition: to star along side Balachander in a film. I’m hopeful my dream would come true one day!” he concluded.
