IT was not one the usual beauty pageants where zero sized models scorched the ramp with their stunning grace. Sunday evening saw a bevy of beautiful women from the small screen hitting the ramp at La Amicale club, with confidence at the Miss Chinnathirai 2008 pageant.
After a delayed start, the evening began with small screen star Vijay Adhiraj bringing to light the brain behind the concept of Miss Chinnathirai; heart throb of the small screen, actor Vishwa. He said, “This show is one with a difference. The participants are not models but are people who are well known on the small screen,”Vishwa also shared his memories of how and why he came up with the concept back in 2007, “We are happy to be back with the second edition of the show”
Small screen celebrities Madhu, Aarthi, Tarika, Swetha, Deepa, Julie, Riyaa, Anisha, Kaavya and Aparna were selected as participants after a preliminary test. The six judges for the evening were Director Madesh, small screen actor and director Thiruselvam, model Kaavya, silver screen heroine and Katradhu Tamil actress Anjali and small screen actor and winner of Miss Chinnathirai 2007, Santhoshi. The contestants had four rounds to display their beauty and confidence.
The Traditional wear round saw them walking the ramp with intricately embroidered sarees designed by designer Nisha. The second round saw the participants displaying their talent on-stage with many opting to sing and dance while Swetha performed mimicry and Tarika performed a daring stunt by breaking a concrete slab.
As only a part of the venue comprised the stage, there were quite a few men who were indulging themselves with the visual and liquid intoxication provided. The third and the fourth round saw the ladies scorching the ramp in western and evening wear.
The evening also saw had dance performances by other popular small screen stars like Tinku, Neepa, Deepak and Priyadarshini with dancers from the Temple Dance Company. Playback singer Mahati entertained the audience with some of her popular numbers.
Director Madesh asked the ladies to define womanhood for which they were given two minutes to script and deliver their answers, in a test of intellect and personality. Small screen compere Riyaa walked away with the Miss Chinnathirai 2008 award. She stated ‘God cannot be in all places. That is why he created a mother in every house’. Actors Tarika and Anisha took the second and the third place respectively.
After all the pomp and show, it somehow seemed as though encouraging small screen stars was never the purpose of the show. While nine girls walked away with different titles for excellence in varied body features, actor Aarthi was left without any. After the show when the winners were posing for the lensmen, Aarthi’s father picked up a brawl with the organisers on the backstage.
