Veteran Carnatic musician V Dakshinamoorthy, left the company of his loved ones for his heavenly abode, from his Mylapore residence this Friday. He was 94. With an illustrious career that spanned close to six decades, he has undoubtedly left his immortal mark with contributions to 125 movies and a whopping 859 songs across Malayalam, Tamil and Hindi !
A native of Ambalappuzha (Kerala) , the veteran has to his name the Swathi Puraskaram – which is Kerala government’s highest musical honor, not to forget, the prestigious Kerala State Film Award – for Lifetime Achievement and a Kerala State Film Award – for Best Music Director.
He made a thundering entry with the Malayalam movie Nalla Thanka which released as Nalla Thankal in Tamil. Thereafter, it was no looking back as the late great was gifted with a unique facility to apply any Carnatic music bhava with equal ease. The Bhakthi rasa being his forte, he was adept at suiting his music to the mood of the visuals with finesse.
During the course of time, he developed a great camaraderie with poets like Vayalar Rama Varma and P Baskaran. However, it was Sreekumaran Thampy with whom he composed a ton of his elegant tunes. Hailed as a maestro of semi-classical songs, singers like P Susheela and the three generations of the Yesudas family owe their hearty respects to the composer for he introduced them to a career in movies. His last rites will be performed at the Triplicane crematorium. The late Dakshinamoorthy is survived by his wife and three children. We pray, that his soul may rest in peace and unite with the divine in everlasting joy.
