Following the protest meeting held outside the residence of veteran director Bharathiraja’s Theni residence by All India Forward Block protest, against the overall making of his latest film Annakodi, the police have swung into action and have already beefed up security outside the residence of the director’s residence situated at Neelankarai on the outskirts of Chennai.
Starring newcomer Lakshman and Karthika Nair in lead roles and with Bharathiraja’s son Manoj playing the main villain, Annakodi had been mired in controversies right from day 1, when it was launched more than one-and-a-half years ago. Ameer was first signed up and was then replaced by R. Parthiepan whereas Bharathiraja finally opted for Lakshman. Iniya, who was signed up earlier, was also shown the exit door.
As per the film’s script, Lakshman plays a Dalit boy who is in love with Karthika, who plays as a Thevar girl. Thevar Associations had protested strongly against the script even before the film hit the screens. A case was also filed at the Madurai bench of the High Court of Madras. Last weekend Forward Bloc activists congregated outside Bharathiraja’s Theni residence to protest against the film.
Bharathiraja’s statement to the public to remain ‘vigilant’ against effort by ‘certain sections’ in protesting against the film appears to have found few takers. In the meanwhile, anticipating further trouble, the Chennai police have beefed up security measures outside the director’s residence in Neelankarai off Chennai.
