Kollywood furious as Shahrukh’s Chennai Express makes a mockery of Tamils

imagesMany hoped that Shahrukh ‘s recent visit to Chennai at the 7th Vijay TV awards, was an attempt on his behalf to bridge the gap he had created with his sloppy production Ra One – credited as nothing but a half baked caricature on Kollywood movies and his fellow countrymen.

Dashing all good hopes, the recent trailer of his upcoming project Chennai Express went viral for almost the very same reasons. Yet again, Bollywood’s so called supreme hero – Shah Rukh Khan, has sought to cheap gimmicks at the cost of Tamil culture!!! If his character Sekhar Subramaniam from his yesteryear box office flop Ra One,was a case where he cast himself as a Tamilian who could dance around the tress singing Hindi songs but could not speak a word in Tamil. Add to it the embarrassment Tamilians faced, with words Koncham sounding Condom.

In Chennai Express Deepika Padukone, who expects to make her foray later into Tamil alongside Rajnikanth’s Kochadiyaan, shoulders him with her exaggerated fail attempt at mocking South Indian’s, with a pseudo Tamil-Hindi accent.

Representation South Indian culture in a crude way, be it Kathakali, the temple rituals, or the crude concept of mimicking vocalists from South India in the songs. Here is Shahrukh trying to relive his Karan Arjun days, fighting for his love at the age of 47, punching down burly South Indian men double his size with all ease.

Expressing her sentiments Archana Kalapathi CEO of AGS Cinemas wrote on her microblog “I thought SRK likes chennai!!..Super confused as to what language Deepika is speaking!! Is that Tamil?? Guys, we might be dark skinned but we are beautiful, Tamil is a beautiful language, We can speak pretty decent Hindi and fluent English. Our movies our exciting and beautiful with amazing story lines and we definitely don’t have noodles with Thayir Sadham!!We don’t eat thayir sadham with everything.”

In reply to which Chinmayi says “ I guess we are being told it is Tamil:)Gotta hold the ones who do research responsible when sumos fly, men with aruvaals appear from nowhere and all that in our films, it is fun but yes when it comes in a language we don’t speak it does hurt. Noodles and curd is eww actually ”

Likewise, Siddharth wrote with a sarcastic tone on his microblog “‘Chennai Express’ seems like a well researched, nuanced film that has a great understanding of South Indian culture specially Tamil..said NO ONE.”
