Justice Mr. Karunakaran, who recently banned the release of the film Madisar Mami for its ‘highly objectionable’ title, has praised the late and legendary MGR for always maintaining the clean image of a ‘non-smoker’ and ‘non-drinker’ in all his films. “These qualities almost made him a ‘Godly’ person in the eyes of the people who made him chief minister till his last breath,” the judge remarked.
The judge came down hard on the scripts of films made nowadays, the characteristics of today’s heroes and the titles of films. In his judgment, he said “In the past, we had films titled Pasamalar, Panama Pasama, Anbu Karangal, Thai Sollai Thattathey, Thirudathey, Ethir Neechal, Kappalottiya Thamizhan etc. wherein the heroes were depicted as hard-working individuals who were honest and dedicated to the core.
“This gave them almost a ‘godly’ status. MGR, who never smoked nor drank liquor on-screen, was catapulted to the status of the chief minister of the State and remained so till he breathed his last. Today’s films, on the contrary, show heroes indulging in many crimes and getting scot-free at the end of the film. Obviously, the fans want to emulate their ‘heroes’ resulting in the increasing incidents of crime in our society.
“ Filmmakers include sex, violence and all sorts of sequences to ensure that their films turn out to be successful. This affects society as a whole and when one looks at the titles of films such as Thiruttu Payalae, Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga, Pokkiri, Sandakozhi, Mankatha and Ratha Sarathiram, it is difficult to believe that the Censor Board is functioning in a vigilant manner,” the judgment concluded.
Kollywood has been rattled by the judgment and the harshly-worded comments of the judge. Last heard, a few producers are planning to change the titles of their upcoming films which are in various stages of production.
