Actress-producer Lakshmi Manchu, the Oklahoma graduate, has regretted the fact that ace director Mani Ratnam had chosen to completely ‘black-out’ her portions in his latest film Kadal. Unfortunately, though, as the film has turned out to be a ‘failure’, her cries of despair have gone unheeded.
Starring newcomers Gautham Karthik and Thulasi Nair in the lead, the film hit the screens all over the State and elsewhere on 01st February. With heirs of yesteryear’s hit pair of Karthick and Radha debuting as the lead pair and with Rahaman’s music to boot, the film was expected to do well at lease for the first few books. As it has turned out, it hasn’t been the case.
Daughter of Telugu superstar Mohan Babu and a producer in her own right, Lakshmi Manchu was hoping to make a mark in Tamil films by portraying a significant role in Kadal. However, she was shocked to note that her role had ‘dwindled’ considerably in the film’s final version. The film’s Telugu version was simultaneously released in Manchu’s native State of Andhra Pradesh, making it all the more embarrassing for her.
Laskhmi claims that she had done ‘many sequences’ in the film including a duet song(nenjukulle) with ‘action king’ Arjun but regretted that most of her sequences had been ‘chopped off’ in the film along with the song sequences. However, she is not angry with the ace director as she is absolutely sure that whatever the veteran did, it was only in the best interest of the film.
It may be recalled that in Maniratnam’s Raavanan too, actresses Ranjitha and Priyamani did have a lot say about their portions getting pruned down.
