A flower straight out of paradise is who our beloved A.R.Rahman is. Our Isai Puyal turns 46 today, yet his music is unscathed and turns younger. Indian Cinema has always been amidst gaze and glitter, but something as big as “Oscar” was always missing. Rahman’s double Oscar gave Rendu Laddoos if it wasn’t enough. Born as Dileep Kumar he went on to become as one of the finest musicians ever in the country. Be it Carnatic, Ghazal, Folk, Indo pop, Rock, and any other form of music you’ve heard, he is the master without a doubt and his music is just a joyful perennial ecstasy that takes the soul to a different dimension.
Rahman redefined music the way it was with using latest instruments and technology, right from being a novice in Roja. He was also one of the first timers to bring digitalization in Indian music industry. It’s important to mention the works of late H. Sridhar, the sound engineer who boosted Rahman’s digital music to a level far beyond our imagination. Sridhar’s utter confidence gave Rahman’s music a flamboyant outlook in live milieu. Rahman has been using “Logic pro” music writing software for years which shows how much he embraces Technology. In his own quotes “Synthesizer is an ideal combination of music and Technology” led to establish one of the most sophisticated hi-tech music studios in Asia.
The Bombay Theme music reappeared in various compilations like Deepa Mehta’s “Fire” , Palestinian movie “Divine Intervention” , Nicolas Cage “Lord Of War” to mention a few. His digitalised sound based on pop – rock and reggae amalgamated with traditional Indian music like carnatic, folk number has given what Indian music was missing in the International arena. The song “Raasathi” in “Thiruda Thiruda “was exclusively made on innovative “Acapella” (music without instrumentals). The heavy dosage of female humming and chanting juxtaposed with Shahul Hameed’s poignant voice is a fresh start in Indian music.
Rahman also broke the traditional Pallavi – Charanam mode in Yaakai Thiri with repetitive recitation of Pallavi throughout the swaying dance number. Ratnam – Rahman & Shankar – Rahman paradigm is extraordinary and every movie is novelty at its best. Rahman is indebted to Ratnam for introducing him in the much acclaimed film “Roja” which also earned him the prestigious National award, something which debutants have been dreaming for.
Why the Simplicity:
“As simple you become, so shall your fame! ” Rahman has almost bagged every single available music award, been the motivation for any musician, never has let a piece of controversy in his way and yet his simplicity remains intact. “Mere paas maa hai” (even if I have nothing, I have my mother) were his words during his famous Oscar speech. Ace Director Danny Boyle also spoke in awe of the musician’s simplicity even after obtaining supernatural fame. Even after winning two Oscars he quoted “I have not achieved anything, I have not ended Poverty, not stopped wars, I am just a small musician who has got an award that is it”! How does he convey such a humble message? Dil Se!
He is very patriotic and works like ” Vande Matram”, “Thamizha Thamizha”, and the songs in “Rang De Basanti”, “Swadesh” are enough to showcase. Love, Peace and Kindness has always been his theme and songs like “Pray for me brother”, “Gurus of peace “including the recent sensation “Infinite Love” are some of the songs targeted at bringing world peace.

At the age of 9, Dileep Kumar loved playing carom and hated the early morning practice of the Piano.
He had to quit his studies at 15, owing to poor attendance.
He would love to dismantle and reassemble music instruments as a child.
He had dreams to become an Electronics or Computer Engineer.
Rahman is a gaming person and his gaming chums are usually his children.
Though he is referred as “Mozart of Madras”, “Isai Puyal”, “Oscar Nayagan”, and much more, he is affectionately called only as “Rahman” by his family and friends.
Rahman’s skills as a playback singer is evident in his first song and first movie itself. On the sets of “Roja”, Maniratnam heard Rahman humming “Aelaeloaa aelae”, which Ratnam instantly took a liking and asked him to include it in “Chinna Chinna aasai”.
The old keyboard that he always used to play as a Teenager is still at display in his studio.
He broke the traditional pattern by bringing in other state singers to sing Tamil songs.
Ergo, he might be the greatest musician, ground breaking innovator, Oscar winner, Grammy Award winner, yet he is a true Indian at heart and an example of what simplicity can give you beyond fame and success…. Infinite Love!
