The Sangeet Natak Akademi is the first National Academy set up by the Republic of India to facilitate excellence in music, dance and drama in the country. Annually the autonomous organization confers awards to the excelling artists in the nation with its Sangeet Natak Akademi Puraskar.
The year 2012 turned out to be a great year for artists from Chennai. This time around five artists from the state were chosen by the selection committee. It included four musicians who have made their mark internationally and a dancer Priyadarsini Govind who completes her four decades in the field of Bharatanatyam.
Notably, Isaignani Ilayaraja will receive recognition for his contribution to music this year. He has been recognized for his pursuit of melodies coupled along with his experimental approach on the same.Secondly, T H Vikku Vinayakram will receive a fellowship for his illustrious ghatam playing this year. Songster O S Thyagarajan and percussionist K V Prasad will also be awardees.
Apart from them there are thirty two others, who have been selected for the award from all over the country. The beneficiaries will receive an award of Rs three lakhs, an Angavastram (shawl) and a tamrapatra (a brass plaque) on the occasion.
