Over the past few years, the number of successful television artistes who have managed to translate their small-screen success into stardom in Kollywood has been on the ascendance. The trend was very different prior to that as many successful and popular small-screen artist had toiled their best to get an ‘opening’ in the film industry but somehow they were just unable to make it.
The change witnessed in recent times is that it’s not only the actors but also programme hosts on television who have been able to make a mark in films. Sivakarthikeyan, who had been hosting reality shows and award functions for Vijay TV, debuted as hero in director Pandiraj’s Marina. This has paved way for him in starring in films such as Manam kothiparavai and Dhanush’s 3. He now has a couple of films on hand including Ethir Neechchal, actor Dhanush’s home-production.
Today’s leading comedian Santhanam was once famous for his reality comedy show titled Lollu Sabha on the same channel. The popularity via small screen gained him an opening in films and though his age made it possible for him to star as the hero’s friend in many films, it’s ace comedian Vadivelu’s continued absence for close to two years now which has made Santhanam the ‘numero uno’ comedian in Kollywood as on date.
Ganeshkar (earlier known as ‘Master Ganesh’) was staring in reality comedy shows on another channel before making the grade as actor in films. His wife Arthi too was a successful actress on small screen and is now among the top comediennes in films.
James Vasanthan, who has hosted a variety of programmes on the tellly, is now a popular music director in films. Despite courting fame in films, James continues to host a reality show on Vijay TV.
Is the ‘idiot box’ getting ‘intelligent’ of late?
