Thuppakki – Tamil Movie Review
The Jawans ( the military) who protect our country from the enemies live 11 months away from home carrying the memories of their 1 month with their families every year. We seldom think about their selflessness.. Indian Army should felicitate Director A.R. Murugadoss for presenting them to us in a well packaged two hour fast paced movie.
Global terrorism has become deep rooted and you often wonder how they are able to mobilize human resources. The “Slepper cells” – ordinary people , even your neighbour, may be one of them . They lead normal lives till they are called for a particular “job”. They never question nor know where the instructions come from. Eradication of such Sleeper cells forms the back bone of this film.
Vijay as an army jawan cum Defence Intelligent Agent has changed his entire body language for Thuppaki. He presents a very stylish persona and is at ease with Tamil, English and Hindi. Yes Hindi as well ! The interval block where over his mobile he says “ I am waiting “ is absolutely awesome. The romantic interlude with Kajal Agarwal somehow doesn’t have the same entertaining aspects as the director’s earlier movies- Deena ( Ajit – Laila), Ghajini ( surya –Asin). It is a curse that Tamil film has to have a heroine and a few songs just to make it a saleable wholesome entertainment. Jayaram has done a cameo producing a few laughs. Sathyan as Vijay’s friend playing the role of a sub- inspector yet again proves that he is a fine performer.
The film has some brilliant narration. The planning ( counter terrorism) and execution to kill the 12 sleeper cells is an edge of the seat visual thriller. The move by the villain to track Vijay with the help of the wedding group photographs and the events that follow are again very well thought of screen play. However, the fight where Vijay with a single Thupakki killing tens of villain’s men with machine guns makes you wonder why Murugadoss dint think of something more logical. May be he wanted to justify the title. Even a normal Thuppaki with Vijay may be is more powerful than any number of machine guns with others!. Again the climax where the villain ( Vidut Jamwal – good physique but poor acting) could have shot Vijay easily but did not is an absolute dumb sequence. There should have been a plausible explanation for keeping him alive.
Camera work by Santhosh Sivan has elevated the movie to the next level. It is unobtrusive and brilliant. The flash ( cut) back scenes have been shown in a novel way with the screen freezing and changing colour. Not every film can have the luxury of having him as cinematographer as he himself is a sought after Director.
Special mention has to be made on Sound mixing and editing . As there are quite a few languages spoken , barring some places where they show sub- titles, you can hear in a very low tone the original language which is superimposed by the Tamil dialogue. This is the first such time I have seen this technique used so effectively .
Harris Jayaraj – Murugadoss combination usually has catchy songs. But for “Google Goggle “ other songs are very average. But the music director has more than compensated with the back ground score which keeps up the tempo throughout .
I am happy that the director after his ( bad) experience with” Ezham Arivu “ has made an easy to understand movie which can be appreciated by audience in all ( A, B & C)centres. With Vijay as the hero, he has not wasted that golden opportunity.
At the same time , after a long time ( barring Nanban which of course was a different genre) this would also be a winner for Vijay. His understated stylish and intense performance will be talked about for sure. Thuppaki is certainly a shot in the arm for his career.
