Producer-director Shankar has long back shelved the idea of producing films. The director’s last film as a producer was Rettaichuzhi which starred veteran directors K. Balachander and Bharathiraaja in prominent roles and released in April, 2010. The film also had newcomer Aaree and the established Anjali as the romantic pair in it.
Despite the presence of two of the most successful directors in Kollywood, the film turned out to be a miserable flop at the box-office. Shankar was so shocked by the film’s box-office performance that he decided not to indulge in producing films for some time. It is said that Bharathiraaja reportedly demanded and got Re.1 crore for starring in the film. Though Shankar didn’t want to give the sum that was demanded, he had to give in to the wish of the senior director.
Many newcomers approached Shankar in the past couple of years but couldn’t convince him to plunge into film production again. Shankar, who has produced films like Veyil and Eeram, finally relented when another newcomer met him and narrated a rather interesting script to him.
“I had purposely stayed away from producing films. However, I must agree that your script has tempted me to resume producing films again. Wait for a word from me,” is what Shankar has reportedly told the aspiring director. It remains to be seen how long the newcomer would have to wait: would it be few weeks or few months?
