There was a time in the sixties and seventies when the whole of Tamil Nadu used to wear festive look on the eve of release of films starring the late and legendary actor MGR and Sivaji Ganesan. The fans of both the stars would clash with each other, in a friendly manner, though whenever films of the stars used to hit the screens. The same mood has now returned in Chennai.
MGR’s super-duper hit Kudiyirundha Koyil and Sivaji’s magnum opus Karnan hit the screens in re-release at some of the city’s leading multiplexes and popular cinema halls yesterday. While elaborate publicity was attempted announcing the re-release of Sivaji’s period-flick Karnan, there wasn’t any announcement about the re-release of MGR’s Kudiyirnudha Koil, one of the actor’s mega-hit films which had Jayalalithaa as heroine.
it may be recalled that producer-director Bandulu who suffered losses while making Karnan, compensated it by making another mega-hit MGR-starrer Aayirathil Oruvan which had Jayalalithaa as MGR’s heroine. Eager fans of Sivaji have attempted the re-release hoping it’d be a success story at the box-office this time around.
Fans of the late actors thronged the venues in large numbers at the halls screening both Kudiyirundha Koil as well as Karnan. Despite the publicity campaign for the Sivaji-starrer, crowds appeared large in screens showing the MGR-starrer which once again proved that MGR is the undisputed ‘emperor of box-office’ at all times. Just like it’s done on the eve of a new film’s release, fans burst crackers, distributed sweets and then got tickets to watch the MGR-starrer.
