Many cinematographers like Ashok Kumar, Balumahendra, Santosh Sivan, Rajiv Menon, Thangar Bachchan and K.V. Anand turned film makers. Not many are aware that popular character artist Ilavarasu is also a cinematographer by profession. He started off as a cameraman and worked in Seeman’s Prabhu-starrer Panchalankurichi.
He worked as an assistant cameraman under noted cinematographer B. Kannan and then worked as cinematographer in 13 films including Vijay starrer Ninaithen Vandhai before debuting as an actor in Bharathiraja’s Vedham Pudidhu.He even got the best cinematographer award from the Tamil Nadu Government for Manam Virumbuthey Unnai, directed by Sivachandran.
Ilavarasu has now become one of the most sought-after character actors in Kollywood who can take on any role(s) and excel in it. In Rasu Mathuravan’s Muthukku Muthaga, he played a very significant emotional role which won him many accolades from the movie-goers as well as the critics.
He says that his upcoming film Kondan Koduthan, where he plays a farmer’s role, would be a very significant one in his career. He has starred in the film donning just the loin-cloth in order to suit the role of an illiterate farmer. When queried about the clothing and his role, Ilavarasu says “If the role and the script demands so, I’m even ready to go nude. I’m a director’s actor and I love all the characters I play!”
