Noted film director Bharathi Raja has decided to return the Padma Shri award conferred on him by the Government of India. This decision was announced at a function organised in Chennai, where the entire film fraternity converged to express their solidarity for the Sri Lankan Tamil Issue on Thursday (April 23rd, 2009).
The event was well attended by several directors of Tamil cinema such as Ameer, Cheran and many more eminent personalities such as Sathyaraj.
Before making an announcement, Bharathi Raja displayed the award to all who were present at the venue, and said that efforts are already on the way for its quick return.
Bharathi Raja is one of the legendary directors of Tamil cinema. He directed several landmark films like Muthal Mariyathai (with Sivaji Ganesan in the lead), Karuththamma, Alaigal Oyvadhillai, Mann Vasanai, Vedham Pudhithu, Kizhakku Cheemaiyile and Anthimanthaarai.
