What happens when the most happening names in the film industry and the who’s who of Hollywood come together? Of course, ‘the next big thing’ in Indian filmdom is born. As a diehard movie fan, you can be on cloud nine, expecting one of the best movies of the era. Or maybe, you can be on the 19th Step, gazing at your favourite stars in awe, waiting for a breakthrough movie. Yes, 19th Step. Intriguing and unique the title may seem, but no less unique are the cast and the crew of the movie.
Directed by Bharat Bala and produced under the banner of Walt Disney, USA, 19th Step is undoubtedly one of the top contenders for the ‘next big thing’ in tinsel town with veteran South Indian star Kamal Haasan and Bollywood’s latest rage Asin in the cast. To add a bit of international flavour, we have Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano in the lead role. Indeed, a meeting of Tamil, Japanese and English film cultures. No wonder the movie is produced in all these three languages.
What exactly is 19th Step all about? Well, that is a mystery yet to be revealed. However, the script, which springs from popular Malayalam script writer M.T. Vasudevan Nair’s pen, is said to be the tale of a Samurai warrior trying to master the ancient Indian martial art of ‘Kalaripayattu’. Kamal is reportedly cast in the role of an Indian martial arts guru; Asin will play a traditional Indian woman who is well-versed in martial arts. A good portion of the film will be shot in Kerala and Asin will learn ‘Kalaripayattu’ from traditional gurus in Kerala for this film. Shooting will commence from the second half of this year.
Let us hope 19th Step sets a new trend in East-West collaborations after India’s glory at the Oscars.
