No. We are not talking about any Tamil dubbed version of a Wild West movie. This news is about Simbudevan’s upcoming cowboy movie! Simbudevan and Raghava Lawrence planned to team up for a movie.
Remember? It turns out to be a cowboy movie! This is the first cowboy movie in Kollywood in the last 38 years; Jaishankar’s Ganga, released in 1971, was the last cowboy movie in Tamil! Though the film will be adventurous, like all Simbudevan films – Imsai Arasan and Arai En 305-il Kadavul – it will bank heavily on comedy. Padmapriya and Lakshmi Rai will be the heroines.
Of course, cowboy movies are rare in Tamil, as audiences find it hard to relate to them. Western, a genre in itself, is completely inseparable from the American milieu; cowboy movies stemmed out of this genre. Most of these movies – set in the deserts of North America, mostly in the times when European settlers were still at loggerheads with native Americans – predominantly speak about ranchers, completely opposite to their Indian counterparts. While herdsmen here are quite civilized, an American cowboy is typically an anti-hero, hardened mentally and physically by the harshness of the arid deserts and the dirty rules of his society.
By picking up this rare genre, Simbudevan has made everyone curious. It would be interesting to watch how the talented director would adapt this genre to Indian conditions and instill comedy in it. Or is he going to make a caricature of a typical cowboy, something like Quick Gun Murugan?! Looking at the title, it certainly looks like an alter ego to Quick Gun Murugan is getting ready! We will have to wait and watch.
PS: Irumbukkottai Murattu Singam will be made on a huge budget – approximately 14 crores! Kalpathi Agoram, who produced the recent hit Subramaniyapuram, is producing this film for A.G.S.
