Today is the birthday of director Gautham Vasudev Menon and we at TamilWire.net, join his fans worldwide to wish him a very happy birthday.
For hardcore action buffs and film lovers, director Gautham Menon’s genre of films belongs to an exciting and unexplored stratum of Tamil cinema. An engineering graduate, Gautham entered movies as assistant director to the most-acclaimed Rajeev Menon while the latter was making Minsara Kanavu and learnt the nuances of the art of film making.
Gautham’s first film, Minnale, had Madhavan and Reema Sen in lead roles. Minnale’s story as well as characterizations were completely different from the stuff that was driving Tamil cinema at time. Yet it went down well with the audiences and Gautham even worked on its remake in Hindi. Kakka Kakka, with Suriya and Jyotika, was his next. Kakka Kakka was a complete actioner, but Gautham’s grammar and presentation of action worked as a pleasurable diversion for the audience who were bored with gimmick-ridden stunts and sequences. Then came the blockbuster Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu with Kamal Haasan. Vettaiyaadu… had the Hollywood touch and was a trendsetter. For Pachaikkili Muthucharam, the action thriller with Sarathkumar and Jyotika, Gautham played down the heroism a little, yet added a stunningly realistic touch to the storyboard by casting Jyotika, the hearthrob of Kollywood, in a somewhat villanous role.
Having built up a formidable reputation with such classic and path-breaking films, Gautham is now working on Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya with the young league of Simbu and Trisha, shelving one of his already-announced projects Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikkaalam. Gautham and Harris Jayaraj shared a beautiful work relationship, and almost all of Harris’ tunes for Gautham’s films were chart-toppers. But now, Vinnathaandi Varuvaaya is an A.R. Rahman musical.
A very happy birthday, Gautham Menon and all the very best for your upcoming project!
